“My era at Bayern is over”. A new challenge is on the cards for Robert Lewandowski after Fabrizio Romano reported that the 33-year-old, Polish striker, wants to leave the German capital this summer.
Lewandowski has won a whopping 19 trophies with Bayern Munich during his 8-year spell at the club. This season, at the ripe age of 33, he’s still banging in goals for fun with 54 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions.
His goal scoring record for Bayern has been exceptional. 344 goals in 374 appearances. He’ll go down as a Bayern legend. After announcing his intentions to leave the 31-time Bundesliga Champions, we thought it fitting to look at his best suitors.
Barcelona are the clear frontrunners to sign Lewandowski. With Aubameyang supposedly a free agent come the summertime, it leaves Martin Braithwaite as the ‘best’ striker available for the Catalan giants. There’s no denying that Lewandowski will bolster the attack of any team, but it’s desperately needed at Barcelona. Hopefully they can sort themselves out financially to secure the signing of the prolific goal scorer.
Chelsea are also interested in the Pole. Apparently, he’s been on Thomas Tuchel’s list for quite a while. It would be very interesting if Chelsea were to land Lewandowski. With the likes of Lukaku, Havertz and Werner all already competing for the striker position, they’d have to have a big overhaul this summer. Surely, they can’t move away from Lukaku after one injury riddled season.
Lewandowski isn’t going to move to a club who aren’t competing in the Champions League. The majority of elite teams already have a star striker, so Barcelona and Chelsea seem the most likely destinations.
"Bayern’s a serious club and I believe they won’t keep me; I don't want to play there anymore. A transfer is the best solution. I hope they don't stop me. I hope Bayern won’t stop me just because I’ve a contract until June 2023… maybe I can give you information after international matches."
Bayern have come out saying they’re not happy with the way Lewandowski has made his intentions to leave so public. But for the sake of Football, we’d like to see someone as talented and underrated as Lewandowski play where he wants to play, and not be forced to stay at Bayern for another season.
