Arsenal fans finally have something to sing about. The striker position has been a real need for them since Aubameyang and Lacazette decided to simultaneously forget how to play football, and then subsequently leave the Gunners.
Gabriel Jesus has joined Arsenal for around €50 million. During his five-year spell with Manchester City, he’s lifted the Premier League title four times and the League Cup three times. He’s also netted 95 goals and 46 assists in 233 appearances for the current champions.
This may not seem like a lot. But don’t forget about how heavily rotated the City squad is. A lot of his appearances will be as a substitute. Jesus’s Champions League record is also very impressive. 25 goal contributions in 37 games are nothing to snub. Especially when Arsenal is pushing for those elusive European spots.
This is the perfect time for Jesus to leave City. Jesus was given the task of replacing Agüero. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to fill the hole that the Argentine left behind. With the signing of Haaland from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer, there was no way that Jesus was going to break into the first team. Career wise, this is the right move for the Brazilian International.
The future looks bright for Arsenal. The likes of Saka, Smith-Rowe, Martinelli all emerging as hot young prospects. Jesus has found the perfect landing spot to show the world that he is a top-quality striker. He is the talent to make this Arsenal team his own and faces next to no competition for the starting job. Not to mention, he’ll be playing under a coach who was trained by his former coach. No doubt, there will be crossovers between the two systems.
Arteta has also stated that he wants to implement a similar transfer strategy to Manchester City. They tend to buy players who have already had their Premier League ‘teething’ problems and are more adjusted to the league. Kalvin Phillips, Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling all being prime examples. He’s said that he wants to learn from the mistakes of signing players like Nicholas Pepe. Who may well live up to his hype, but at the moment, he’s had an underwhelming spell in North London.
Jesus is Premier League proven. No ifs, no buts. He is an elite talent and, in our opinion, €50 million seems like a steal. Especially when you consider how expensive Lukaku, Haaland and Darwin Nunez were. Lukaku has failed on his Premier League return, Haaland and Nunez are unproven. Jesus on the other hand is well adapted to the English game.
Given the chance, Jesus is a deadly striker. We’re happy he’s stayed in the Premier League, and we look forward to seeing what he can do this upcoming season.
